Musings Over Morning Coffee: Empty L.A. and Angelfall

In his project EMPTY LA, photographer Matt Logue crafts a post-apocalyptic version of the city without a car or person in sight. The effect has a lot of impact, making the congested City of Angels resemble a ghost town.

As disturbing as it looks, I can’t help but think what perfect inspiration this would be for the apocalyptic novel that I’ll never write.

One of the first books I read when I first got my Kindle e-reader was Susan Ee’s Angelfall. There’s a passage in the first chapter that I’ll never forget, something about cell phones littering the streets, abandoned by their owners when they realized such things were useless without a power grid in operation. I remember hearing the sound of the heroine’s boots crushing the phones at her feet (inside my head) as she made her way on the deserted freeway.

If you’ve never read Angelfall and like a nice YA novel with a brave heroine and a hero that’s literally out of this world, I highly recommend it.
